Introduction California is ranked 1st among the 50 states of U.S. and is the 31st state to be admitted to the U.S union in 1850. California is located on the west coast of United States. The state of California is governed as a republic with three legislative branches-first is the executive branch consisting of the governor and the other independently elected members, secondly the Legislative branch which consists of the assembly and the Senate and lastly the judicial branch consisting of Supreme Court of California and other lower courts. Direct election is also done by the initiative, recall, referendum and ratification. Each political party chooses itself to have a closed primary or primary where only party members and independents vote. The term of the Governor and other state officers is of four years and can be re-elected only once. The state Legislature of California consists of forty members Senate and eighty members of Assembly. In California the Senators serve for four years while the Assembly serves only for two years. The law of California is totally based upon the English Common Law but also carries some of the Spanish civil law features, such as communal property. Capital punishment in California is legal and California has the largest number in death row. California consists of largest judiciary in the United States supervised under seven justices of the Supreme Court of California. The Governor appoints the justices of the Supreme Court and the other Appeal Courts and is retented in every twelve years.
